Indian and Bollywood dance styles have become increasingly popular in the Australian dance culture and belly dancing. This weekend retreat will give you a taste of Bollywood and Tribal Indian Fusion as well as Classical Indian dance Styles.
The weekend is also aimed at the enjoyment of the Indian culture. Friday night you will be adorned with traditional henna artwork on your hands or feet whilst enjoying watching a Bollywood movie. Relax with a chai or glass of wine and scrumptious Indian finger food whilst getting to know each other. On Saturday night enjoy the exotic tastes of an Indian Banquet whilst being entertained by an Indian/Bollywood dance show. Sunday there will be time in between dancing for shopping at our in-house stall or the famous Ettalong Markets right on your doorstep. Finish off the weekend with learning about Ayurvedic Health and enjoy and relax with an Indian Head and Shoulder massage.
About your teachers and workshops:
Shameela’s Indian ancestral roots have always influenced her curiosity and passion for the Indian culture. Teaching Belly Dance locally on the Central Coast for over 12 years as Desert Flame, has given her the platform to explore a unique fusion of the two cultures. Shameela will teach you her own Bollywood routine using fun and funky Bollywood dance moves blended beautifully together with belly dance isolations. Shameela will also be teaching some of the combinations from her dvd “The Eyes of Buddha” which explores a fusion between ATS Tribal Belly Dance, Indian/Bollywood arm and hand gestures and Temple poses as well as some new and exciting Tribal fusion combos.
Jita was born into a musical family her father being a professional classical Indian musician playing sarode. Performing since an early age, Indian Classical dance became a natural progression for her. Jita’s training began in the 1990s in England with Kathak and Folk dance and continued with 5 years of training in Australia with various teachers. Jita will be teaching you Kathak and Bhangra dance Styles. Kathak is a Northern Indian Classical dance which combines the stories from Hindu Mythology and Persian Court dancing. This energetic dance style combines intricate footwork, pirouettes beautiful hand and arm gestures expressing sensuality and a zest for life. Bhangra is a traditional lively folk dance from the Punjabi region of Northern India.
Gabriella has a passion for dance that goes back to her childhood in Hungary, where she learnt and performed Hungarian Folk Dance while attending the Kodaly Academy of Music and Dance .For the past 6 years, she has been learning and performing dance styles ranging from Oriental – Bellydance, ATS, and ATS Fusion. Her love of the Classical Dances of India led her to study Bharatanatyam, Odissi and Kuchipudi, with Poornima Sharma.
Gabriella is also a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine (18 yrs to date) with a Masters in Chinese Herbal Medicine from UTS. As a result, she has an extensive understanding and experience of Ayurvedic Medicine. In ancient times, there was a common wellspring of knowledge that helped shape both these influential and prevailing forms of alternative medicine. Gabriella will be teaching Ayurvedic Health and Indian Head and shoulder massage as well as a workshop in Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam Hand Mudras and Temple Poses.
